National French Debating competition

Well done to Scoil Mhuire’s French Debating team who are now through to the quarter finals of the national French Debating competition, les joutes oratoires, run by the Alliance Française.

Their first debate took place on Monday, 24th October against St. Mary’s Secondary School, Baldoyle. Our team were against the motion that “Our school system doesn’t prepare us for life” («Notre système scolaire ne nous prépare pas pour la vie»). After a very lively debate, Scoil Mhuire defeated an excellent team from St. Mary’s.

On Thursday, 8th December, the team engaged in another nail-biting debate on the motion that “The right to vote should be granted at age 16” («Le droit de vote devrait être accordé à 16 ans»).  Scoil Mhuire defended the motion and despite stiff competition from Athlone Community College, our team succeeded and are now through to the quarter finals of the competition.

Well done so far to all our speakers on this year’s team- Tara C. (Captain), Sophie O., Aisling Ní R. and Emer F.. Well done also to our research team- Amy M., Ellen B., Hannah S. and Mary-Kate M.. We look forward to our next debate in the New Year.
