Scoil Mhuire Students battle it out in German All-Ireland Final debate on 09th of May 2019 at 4.30pm at SIEMENS in the DCU Innovation Campus, Old Finglas Road, Glasnevin

Debating in your own language is not easy – debating in German is even more difficult. Yet 39 school teams (which adds up to approximately 230 students and teachers) entered the All Ireland German Debating Competition in September 2018, organised by the Goethe-Institut Irland, the German Culture Institute.

Five rounds later, and after many arguments proposed and defended, new phrases learned and great deal of team effort, the finalists have emerged. Cistercian College Roscrea will debate against Scoil Mhuire Trim the motion: “Europe needs a more active youth”. Our girls debated successfully against Mount Sackville, St. Pat’s Cavan, Belvedere College, Setanta Phibblestown and Colaiste Iosagain Dublin.

The final debate took place on Thursday, the 9h of May 2019 at SIEMENS in the DCU Innovation Campus, Old Finglas Road, Glasnevin

The competition is in its 23nd year. The debate offers the students the opportunity to use and expand their German language skills and develop confidence, team work and debating skills. Also, students get to meet their peers from all over Ireland in a competitive language environment.

Among the confirmed guests were representatives from the German Embassy, as well as from Siemens Ireland Ltd.

The speakers for Scoil Mhuire team were Anna McGee (Capt.), Leah Devine, Riona Downes and Aoife Woods. Eva Monaghan debated brilliantly in 2 rounds as well
