Under the new assessment system students will be awarded the following grade descriptors instead of the traditional grades A – NG in their State Exams.

Higher Merit75 – 89%
Merit55 – 74%
Achieved40 – 54%
Partially Achieved20 – 39%
Not Graded0 – 19%

Along with the State Exam students will complete two Classroom Based Assessments (CBA).

CBA 1 will completed in second year and CBA 2 will be completed in third year.

The Classroom Based Assessments will be assessed by the subject department in the school linked to that CBA.

They will be awarded the following descriptors

  • Exceptional
  • Above Expectations
  • In Line with Expectations
  • Yet to Meet Expectations

After CBA 2 your daughter will sit and Assessment Task (AT) set by the State Examinations Commission. This task will be based on their work from CBA 2.

The Assessment Task will be graded by the State Examinations Commission and is worth 10% of the State Exam in June.

In the Autumn following the Junior Cycle Exams students will be presented with a Junior Cycle Profile of Achievement (JCPA).

It will contain three elements

  • The grades and descriptors awarded in the State Exams
  • The descriptors awarded in CBA 1 and CBA 2
  • Other Areas of Learning

All 1st year students have the opportunity to study the following optional subjects for one year prior to choosing their subjects for the Junior Cycle. The optional subjects are:

Towards the end of 1st Year, the students will choose 3 of the above optional subjects to study for their Junior Cycle
