On Tuesday, March12th, in an event marking International Women’s Day, the 6th year students were invited to the study hall to enjoy some FAIR TRADE refreshments and take part in a SWOP SHOP being run by 2B C.S.P.E class along with members of the 5th year Wellbeing team.
The students from 2B have been learning about sustainability and making local to global links during their CSPE classes this year. Having studied the negative impact of Fast Fashion* – environmentally, socially and economically – they decided to run a Swop Shop to raise awareness of the need to think globally by acting locally. 2nd and 3rd year CSPE students made posters which are currently display in the study hall and atrium. Students from the 5th year Wellbeing team served up fairtrade tea, coffee, chocolate and bananas, along with locally sourced apples and flapjacks.
Funding for the event was provided through Drogheda Credit Union with Ms Suzanne Gilleece, Branch Manager and herself a past pupil, providing support. We would also like to thank Worldwise Global Schools (WWGS) funded by Irish Aid, for their support with running this annual event in the school calendar. We are so grateful to both organisations – the event proved to be hugely enjoyable for students and staff in attendance. We would also like to thank Iníon Ni Anluain and Ms Morris for their massive support in the build up to this event and thank all staff and students who supported the event on the day.
*Additional training to 2B CSPE provided by Kieran Allen from Education for Sustainability & Emily Briggs from Eco Chic
