Senior Cycle French students have had the opportunity in previous years to participate in French Debating, helping them to improve their oral language and to develop important research and team work skills.

Previous motions included, “Our school system doesn’t prepare us for life” («Notre système scolaire ne nous prépare pas pour la vie»), “The right to vote should be granted at age 16” («Le droit de vote devrait être accordé à 16 ans»), “Civic service should be compulsory in Ireland” (« Le service civique devrait être obligatoire en Irlande »), and “Preserving our heritage is a luxury” (« Préserver notre patrimoine est un luxe »).

The Scoil Mhuire team has achieved great success in the national French Debating competition, les joutes oratoires, run by the Alliance Française, in recent years. In the past, our team has progressed all the way to the semi-finals of the national French Debating competition, and two of our students have won awards for best speaker.
